Hiker Rescued After 20-Foot Fall in North Carolina Gorge

A hiker in North Carolina faced a life-threatening situation after falling 20 feet in Linville Gorge. Emergency crews responded swiftly over the weekend to airlift the injured individual to safety.

Emergency Response

Emergency teams were alerted around 2 p.m. on Sunday about a fallen climber on Shortoff Mountain’s steep section. According to a post by Burke Rescue Inc. and SAR on Facebook, the lead climber, identified as Jacob Gregory, fell approximately 15-20 feet while attempting to place gear 40 feet above a ledge.

After the fall, Gregory hit a nearby rock pillar. Paramedics rappelled to the accident site and conducted an initial assessment. Additional resources were then summoned for further assistance.

Transport and Medical Aid

In a remarkable act of determination, a Burke Rescue volunteer ran 1.5 miles, covering 1,000 feet of elevation within 31 minutes, to deliver critical whole blood to stabilize Gregory for transport.

The rugged terrain necessitated the assistance of a Black Hawk helicopter, part of the North Carolina Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team. Known as “Kill Devil 244,” the helicopter airlifted Gregory to Charlotte for medical care. The operation involved coordination among two dozen local agencies.

An online fundraiser praised the collaborative effort and courage involved in the rescue. “To every responder who answered that call: thank you. You saved a life and brought a husband, father, brother, son, friend, and loved one to safety,” stated the campaign.

Burke Rescue emphasized the inherent risks of climbing and urged climbers to be aware of their abilities and use proper equipment.
