The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 37 suspected migrants from a 30-foot pleasure craft that was stranded nearly 90 miles off the coast of Southern California. The incident occurred when the vessel was left without fuel, food, or water, as reported by the Coast Guard.
The rescue operation began when the boat’s operator contacted the Coast Guard for assistance at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Friday, located about 88 miles from Channel Islands Harbor. The vessel had been adrift for two days without essential supplies or personal safety equipment.
The Coast Guard dispatched several crews to the scene, including cutters Sockeye and Halibut, along with boats from Los Angeles-Long Beach and Channel Islands stations. An air crew also aided the search.
At around 8:30 p.m., crews located the stranded boat and transferred all 37 individuals aboard the Sockeye. Master Chief Peter Nelson, the officer in charge of the Sockeye, commended the efforts, saying, “I could not be prouder of the Coast Guard crews on scene who were directly responsible for 37 lives saved last night.”
Despite challenging conditions far from shore at night, the Coast Guard successfully completed the rescue. Nelson highlighted the crews’ professionalism and skill in handling the situation.
Once aboard the Sockeye, the group was transported to Coast Guard Base Los Angeles-Long Beach, where they were handed over to U.S. Border Patrol. The Coast Guard did not disclose the origins or intended destination of the migrants or the boat.
