Lincoln-Way East Volleyball: A Strong Start and Key Players

3 weeks ago 0

Leila Taylor’s Impressive Season Kickoff

Senior middle hitter Leila Taylor has made a noticeable impact in the early part of the season for Lincoln-Way East. Her outstanding performance is a result of intense offseason training with the Chicago-based Lights Out Volleyball organization. Standing at 5-foot-11, Taylor focused on strengthening her skills through rigorous conditioning and playing against high-level talent.

“I’ve been training hard with lifting and conditioning,” Taylor said. “I’ve always done that but increased it this year. Playing against a higher level of talent at Lights Out has helped me this year.”

Lincoln-Way East, the reigning SouthWest Suburban Conference champion, demonstrated a strong start by securing third place in the 32-team Mizuno Crimson Classic. Despite the absence of Eastern Michigan recruit Klarke Mosby, who underwent knee surgery, improved middle play from Taylor is expected to be beneficial.

Coach Sean Burns remarked on Taylor’s development, stating, “Last year, she started as a junior and she has grown a lot. She can effectively terminate balls and block. Her performance frees up the outsides, which is advantageous for us.”

Junior outside hitter Kolby Ross, committed to Illinois, praised Taylor’s contribution to the team, saying, “She brings a lot of energy and firepower. Even if she’s tired, she does well and keeps everyone motivated. She’s a fun person and great to be around.”

Taylor’s Volleyball Journey

Taylor’s volleyball journey began in Chicago. After moving to the south suburbs, her interest in volleyball intensified upon attending Lincoln-Way East. She reflected on her early days, emphasizing her passion for the sport:

“I knew that volleyball was what I wanted to pursue. In grade school, my sister Liyah and I were the best players. We would pass, set, and try to do everything.”

Despite her hopes to play alongside her sister Liyah, a junior middle hitter for the Griffins, Liyah suffered a season-ending injury last summer.

Milestones and Achievements

Sandburg coach David Vales reached significant milestones over the weekend. He achieved his 900th overall victory, covering both boys’ and girls’ teams, with a 25-21, 25-21 win over Hinsdale Central during the Mizuno Crimson Classic. On Saturday, he secured his 500th win as a girls’ coach with a 25-15, 19-25, 15-9 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South.

Facing coach Bill Schreier, who holds over 1,000 wins, Vales noted, “He has a ton of wins. During the 2021 season, I coached against him twice in one day. Securing win No. 500 against him is meaningful.”

Marist’s Newcomers Rise to the Challenge

Marist, the two-time defending Class 4A state champion, is navigating changes in its starting lineup due to graduation. Junior middle hitter Sommer Shaw, senior middle Kate Steinmetz, and senior defensive specialist Ariella Link have gained valuable playing experience in the RedHawks’ first week, demonstrating assertiveness on the court.

Coach Jordan Vidovic noted, “Some of these girls are new and filling in well. It’s challenging, but the offense is clicking and players are being more assertive.”

Contributions from players and insightful coaching continue to fuel successful performances across teams.
