Conservative advocacy groups are supporting ABC, a Disney-owned network, in its ongoing dispute with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This unusual alliance stems from a review by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, who stated in April that eight ABC-owned stations must show they have acted in the public interest. This probe is part of a broader evaluation of Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
Carr also voiced that ABC should have broadcasted President Donald Trump’s primetime address, suggesting the network’s decision not to was against public interest.
Several conservative and free-market organizations, including the Center for Individual Freedom and Americans for Tax Reform, have urged Carr to avoid setting a precedent that could negatively impact non-liberal organizations in the future. These groups sent a letter to Carr expressing their concerns.
From media and broadband to the space economy, your deregulatory record is helping unleash investment and growth, and we are grateful for your leadership in getting government out of the way.
The letter cautions against turning the renewal process from a predictably routine function into one susceptible to political manipulation. The signatories argue that creating a precedent for non-routine renewals could provide future FCC leadership with undue power, potentially affecting conservative and religious broadcasters.
They emphasize that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 ensures station renewals are practically guaranteed, allowing broadcasters to operate without the constant threat of losing their licenses. This approach helps maintain content neutrality and prevents the FCC from evaluating speech based on content.
Originally scheduled for renewal between 2028 and 2031, the licenses of Disney-owned ABC affiliates were expedited by Trump’s FCC. Stations involved include KFSN-TV in Fresno, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, among others. Conservative groups want these licenses to remain secure, protecting against potential future biases from the FCC.
Meanwhile, ABC has launched a campaign urging viewers to endorse “The View” against FCC scrutiny. The FCC is currently investigating whether ABC’s “The View” complies with rules on providing balanced time for political candidates, following an appearance by Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico.
ABC argues that “The View” should be considered bona fide news, thus exempt from the equal time requirement. The network is home to shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.” In the midst of this dispute, ABC continues to challenge the FCC’s actions, stating that they threaten First Amendment rights.
