CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer recently issued a correction following a false statement about the impact of a Trump administration policy on mail-in voting for U.S. troops stationed abroad. In a conversation with Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger during “The Situation Room,” Blitzer inaccurately implied that military personnel overseas would be affected by measures to restrict mail-in voting.
During Friday’s show, Governor Spanberger addressed the lawsuit filed by Virginia and other states against President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at curbing mail-in voting. She criticized the administration’s tactics as a way to instill fear and discourage participation in a secure means of voting.
Blitzer added that military members in Virginia, who often rely on mail-in ballots, might be impacted by this executive order. Spanberger agreed, noting that many military and diplomatic personnel depend on receiving ballots while serving abroad.
On Monday, Blitzer corrected his previous statement, clarifying that military and overseas voters are not subject to the Postal Service’s new regulations. Their voting process is protected under the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act.
Blitzer’s comments followed issues with the federal judge temporarily halting the implementation of President Trump’s order due to ongoing legal challenges. Despite the confusion, a CNN spokesperson highlighted Blitzer’s clarification, choosing not to expand further.
