Macklin Celebrini: A Rising Star in the NHL and a Strategic Player for the Sharks

The San Jose Sharks’ standout player, Macklin Celebrini, is setting new standards in the NHL. Though only entering his third season, Celebrini’s future salary makes him one of the highest earners by average annual value (AAV) in the league’s history. His five-year, $94 million contract extension begins in the 2027-28 season, with an AAV of $18.8 million.

General Manager Mike Grier expressed satisfaction in securing Celebrini. Despite the substantial investment, Celebrini chose to leave additional earnings on the table. NHL rules allow a player to earn up to 20% of a team’s salary cap. Celebrini could have requested $20.8 million annually, a figure the team would likely have agreed to.

In an interview, Celebrini explained his decision: “I want to ensure that the number made sense for the team with where the salary cap is headed. It’s crucial that everyone can be compensated and that we can build our team effectively. Maintaining some flexibility is beneficial. I’m fully committed to this team and organization.”

Celebrini’s strategic choice to accept a slightly lower AAV saves $2 million, which could prove advantageous. This decision may boost the Sharks’ competitiveness as the team’s cap space allows for more strategic investments in player talent.

The Sharks aim to reestablish themselves as a formidable competitor. They narrowly missed the playoffs last season but with young talent like Celebrini, Will Smith, William Eklund, and Michael Misa, the Sharks hold potential for drawing future free agents.

As the Sharks begin their preseason on September 20 against the Anaheim Ducks, they hope to capitalize on Celebrini’s contract strategy. Their regular season kicks off on October 1 at home against the Florida Panthers. The Sharks’ renewed focus on strategic cap use and team building positions them as a team to watch in the coming years.
