Repeating actions without change can lead to the same outcomes, a notion often described as madness. This adage suited Rory McIlroy’s experience on Friday during the Tour Championship at East Lake.
McIlroy started well, scoring 2-under as he approached the third hole. However, a challenge arose as he attempted to chip uphill towards the green, positioned about 15 yards away. His shot lacked the necessary force, leading the ball to bounce off the slope and return to his feet.
“You must aim long, especially on your second try,” an ESPN+ broadcaster remarked.
Persistent, McIlroy repeated his shot with the same outcome. Yet, on his third attempt, he succeeded in reaching the green, concluding the hole with a double bogey. This lapse affected his aspirations to secure the tournament’s $10 million prize.
Commenting on McIlroy’s performance, ESPN’s Andy North highlighted the difference in player execution between McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. “He’s incredibly skilled,” North noted. “When he’s performing well, few match his prowess. But frequent forced errors, especially with wedges, distinguish him from Scheffler, who avoids such mistakes.”
Despite these setbacks, McIlroy managed to recover, ending the day 1-under and 3-under overall, placing him 22nd among 30 competitors. He trailed the leader, Ryan Gerard, by six strokes, with Gerard at 9-under par.
