Geneva’s Gabe Barwiolek Takes Lead in Season Opener

Last season, Geneva’s soccer team relied heavily on the scoring of Caleb Kelly and Ben Murphy, who together scored 39 goals. With their departure, senior forward Gabe Barwiolek knew the responsibility to lead in goals would be his. He ended last season with six goals and was ready to raise his performance.

Barwiolek embraced this opportunity, stating, “I know I need to have high expectations for myself. This is the year.” New coach Blake Hughes was pleased with what he saw in the opening match against Waubonsie Valley, where Barwiolek scored just three minutes into the game and later secured a 2-1 victory with a penalty kick.

Waubonsie Valley’s Yasser Gomez scored their solitary goal, contributing to their 0-2 start. The match was also part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their renovated Dick Kerner Stadium. Hughes expressed confidence in Barwiolek’s potential, highlighting his summer training in Spain as valuable experience.

“He’s fantastic,” Hughes remarked. “He trained overseas and is ready to shine for Geneva. He’s crucial for our success.” Barwiolek’s skills were evident when a free kick led to a header, and without hesitation, he netted the first goal.

“I saw it land by my feet. I heard ‘shoot,’ so I shot it with my left foot and it went in,” Barwiolek described. “It felt amazing.”

Waubonsie’s coach, Jose Garcia, commended Gomez’s versatility on the field. “He’s our Energizer Bunny, always moving and controlling the ball well,” Garcia said. “He’s a key player for us.”

The decisive moment came in the second half when Barwiolek converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Hughes praised Barwiolek’s technical skills and game awareness. “He’s technically savvy and knows how to handle pressure,” Hughes said. Barwiolek’s instinctive play made a significant impact.

Barwiolek’s exposure to international play through the Soccer Dreams Travel Pro Tour in Spain enriched his game immensely. “Training in Spain was an amazing experience,” Barwiolek shared. “I made memorable experiences and matured as a player.”

The season opener was just what Coach Hughes hoped for from his leading scorer. “We need goals,” Hughes stated plainly. “Barwiolek has to score at least 25 goals this season for us to succeed since we have a lot of sophomores on the team.”
