Meta Reaches Settlement Over Social Media Addiction Claims

Meta, facing accusations of creating addictive platforms for young users, has settled with a group of state attorneys general. The settlement was announced by California Attorney General Rob Bonta. Meta will implement changes to Facebook and Instagram, paying up to $17 billion over ten years.

Changes in User Experience

Changes include default daily time limits for users under 18. Notifications will be restricted at night and during school hours. Bans on plastic surgery filters will also be introduced.

Meta has agreed to make massive transformations to reduce harm from its platforms within months. These measures include time limits, notification restrictions, and more, said Bonta.

The lawsuit, originally filed by 29 states in 2023, now includes 47 states, three territories, and the District of Columbia. Approval from a judge is pending.

Additional Settlement and Allegations

Separately, Meta will pay Texas over $1 billion for similar allegations, bringing the total to just over $18 billion. The lawsuit claimed Meta’s platforms encouraged excessive use among teens and children. It also accused Meta of misleading the public about mental and physical health risks and collecting data from users under 13 without parental consent.

This settlement halts the trial in California, avoiding testimony from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Meta’s chief legal officer, C.J. Mahoney, highlighted that a new framework will govern teens’ social media use.

Our framework empowers parents to manage children’s access. This will only succeed if industry peers join. We need a comprehensive solution, Mahoney stated, urging TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar measures.
