Vance Advocates for LePage’s Congressional Bid Amid Tight Election Race

Vice President JD Vance recently promoted Donald Trump’s economic agenda at an event in Brewer, Maine. He was joined by former Republican Governor Paul LePage, who aims to return to politics by running in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. LePage faces off against Democrat Matthew Dunlap, with the seat currently held by retiring Democratic Representative Jared Golden.

The district often leans Republican, having supported Trump by a 9-point margin in the 2024 election. However, the presence of independent-minded voters has also backed Democrats like Golden in the past, adding unpredictability to the race.

“A guy like Paul LePage. He is not a go-along-to-get-along politician. He is an independent-minded guy, but he is independent for you. There is one thing I know, that Paul cares about and that’s fighting hard for his people every single day. We’ve got to send Paul LePage to Congress,”

Vance stated at a defense manufacturing facility.

LePage’s history as governor from 2011 to 2019 gives him significant name recognition, while Dunlap is known as a state auditor and former secretary of state. Dunlap’s campaign has criticized LePage’s past policies, including Medicaid cuts and support for tariffs, and questions LePage’s potential impact in Congress.

Polling Insights

Polling data indicates a tightly contested race. A February survey from the University of New Hampshire placed LePage slightly ahead by a single percentage point, with a margin of error of 4.5 points. Conversely, a July poll from Tulchin Research, conducted internally by Dunlap’s campaign, showed Dunlap having a slight edge.

Prediction Markets currently favor LePage, reflecting trader sentiment that forecasts a possible Republican success in flipping the seat.

While Maine’s 2nd District has supported Democratic candidates like Obama previously, it has shifted more to the right in recent years, providing an opportunity for LePage. The district comprises rural regions of Maine but includes urban centers like Augusta and Bangor, which can narrow Republican margins.

Statewide, Maine tends to lean Democratic. Despite this, Republican Senator Susan Collins has maintained popularity due to her bipartisan approach, and is facing reelection against Democrat Troy Jackson.

If LePage wins, it could represent a rare success for Republicans outside of redrawn districts. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has endorsed Dunlap, signaling the importance of the race.

As the election approaches, both candidates will focus on convincing Maine voters. Analysts predict LePage holds an edge, but with Democrats investing heavily, the outcome remains uncertain.
