A school district in Maryland has revised its policy on gender identity, which previously faced legal challenges and federal scrutiny. The new changes affect how staff handle information about students’ gender identity.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools has altered its policy to remove certain instructions to staff. Previously, staff were directed not to disclose students’ gender identity unless legally obligated. This has now been revised in the updated policy.
The earlier version of the policy was contested due to its classification of a student’s gender identity as confidential medical information. Concerns were raised about this under federal law governing student education records. The Trump administration had also argued this classification blocked parental access to important information about their child. The federal government threatened legal action against the district if changes were not implemented.
