Kyle Kirkwood Wins Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C.

On a sunny Sunday in Washington, D.C., Florida’s Kyle Kirkwood claimed victory in a unique IndyCar race. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix marked the celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary with a 250-mile event combining speed and spectacle.

Kirkwood, racing for Andretti Global, started in second place. He quickly seized the lead with a bold move past Alex Palou, the championship leader, near the National Archives building. From that point, Kirkwood stayed in control.

During the weekend, cars reached speeds of approximately 180 miles per hour, racing down Pennsylvania Avenue between the Capitol and the White House. The seven-corner track included landmarks like the D.C. courthouse and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

“This is incredible. That was a hard race. 147 laps. I’m out of breath right now,” Kirkwood said in a post-race interview.

President Donald Trump kicked off the event with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Trump also participated in an Air Force One flyover and a “lap of honor” in his armored limousine.

Corporate sponsors such as Boeing, Starlink, and Amazon were prominently featured. They utilized the event to spotlight their business interests before the federal government.

The race weekend began with practice sessions, followed by qualifying and a pre-race warmup. Although officials hinted at making this an annual event, there are no confirmed plans for another race in Washington.

Drivers appreciated the stunning views from inside their helmets. However, David Malukas noted the potential distractions near iconic landmarks. Malukas crashed on Lap 37, leading to a caution that sent many racers to the pits.

Mayor Bowser estimated 140,000 attendees each day, promoting the event as an economic boost despite road closures and disruptions that frustrated locals. The race also caused flight disruptions at Washington National Airport.

Fans lined the fences on Pennsylvania Avenue to catch a glimpse of the race. Luis Chavez, a Maryland resident, attended in a Pato O’Ward Arrow McLaren IndyCar shirt. Chavez is a racing enthusiast who has watched races across various series, including Nascar and Formula 1.

With three races left, Palou still leads in the championship standings, although Kirkwood closed the gap significantly in Washington.

Palou, aiming for more championships, expressed gratitude for his team and promised to continue pushing for victory.
