Mexican Governor Steps Down Amid Drug Trafficking Allegations

August 2026 – The governor of Sinaloa, Ruben Rocha Moya, who faces drug trafficking charges in the United States, unexpectedly resigned from his position. This decision came shortly after he had resumed his duties following an investigation by Mexican authorities.

Ruben Rocha Moya, previously on leave since May, announced his return on social media. However, within a day, he submitted a request to the state congress for a “temporary leave of absence of indefinite duration, exceeding 30 days,” sharing the document on social media site X.

His swift resignation was met with criticism from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. She argued that no personal interest should override the welfare of the country. “Power without principles becomes arrogance; power without limits, abuse,” she remarked in a post on X, referencing Rocha’s actions without naming him.

The U.S. Justice Department charged Rocha and nine other officials from the Morena party in April, demanding their extradition due to alleged collaboration with the Sinaloa Cartel. This marked the first occasion where a sitting Mexican politician faced public charges from the U.S. Rocha defended his return, maintaining his innocence and declaring a clear conscience.

Rocha Moya, at 77 years old, has been a prominent political figure, closely aligned with President Sheinbaum and former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Since 2021, Rocha has governed Sinaloa.

The governor became mired in a scandal in 2023 involving the Sinaloa Cartel. His name emerged in a letter from a cartel capo handed to U.S. law enforcement, suggesting an intended meeting with Rocha Moya during the capo’s abduction by a rival cartel faction.

Rocha Moya’s legal challenges include federal charges such as narcotics importation conspiracy and possession of machine guns, with potential life imprisonment or a mandatory minimum of 40 years if convicted.

Under pressure from President Trump, Mexico faces scrutiny to enhance its efforts against narcotrafficking, with Trump frequently asserting that Mexican governance is tainted by drug-affiliated politicians. Trump has proposed military support to Sheinbaum, which she rejected.

The Sinaloa Cartel, a major entity in the drug trade, is among six Mexican groups labeled as foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration.
