Casualties and Escalations in Ongoing Russia-Ukraine Conflict

In Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, at least 15 people lost their lives in a drone attack by Russia on a shopping center, Ukrainian authorities reported. This tragic event was part of multiple offensives carried out on the same day, including separate attacks in the regions of Mykolaiv and Kharkiv, which culminated in a total of 21 fatalities.

Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suffered significant damages. Zelenskyy described the attack as a “double-tap” strike, indicating that a first wave of drones was followed by a second during rescue efforts. He criticized these acts as terroristic and pledged a response. Oleksandr Hanzha, leading the military administration in Dnipropetrovsk, stated the attack resulted in 15 deaths and injuries to 130 people, including 23 children.

Kryvyi Rih has endured multiple assaults since the conflict began over four years ago. One of the deadliest was in April 2025, causing 20 deaths, including nine children. Ukraine’s defense systems continue to struggle, evident from earlier events where two elderly women were killed and others injured in Kharkiv. Another drone strike in Mykolaiv killed four, including three children.

Ukrainian forces managed to neutralize or shoot down 107 out of 135 drones launched by Russia overnight, the Ukrainian air force confirmed. This action followed another major attack on Kyiv, resulting in 16 casualties. These large-scale offensives have intensified. The UN reported Kyiv as significantly affected in July, with 54 civilian deaths and 202 injuries. Russian forces exploit the limited availability of Patriot air defense missiles in Ukraine, increasing the frequency of ballistic missile attacks.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones targeted a Russian oil refinery in Belgorod, causing one death and injuring four others. Zelenskyy stated that drones also hit a refinery in Perm and a military airfield in Volgograd. Russian media reported fires at industrial sites due to these strikes. The Russian Ministry of Defense mentioned intercepting 325 drones across Russian territories and Crimea. Later, 211 additional drones were downed.

The conflict sees no significant progress on the battlefield, yet both nations have increased long-range drone attacks. Ukraine has developed indigenous long-range drones, prompting global attention from governments and defense companies. Ukrainian officials aim to make the Russian public recognize the conflict’s impact, potentially pressuring President Vladimir Putin to negotiate peace. However, Putin has yet to signal any intention of ending the invasion.
