The United States has approved a potential sale valued at $4.5 billion. This deal involves four aerial refueling aircraft being sold to Qatar, including related equipment. This move was confirmed on Thursday. The State Department has given the green light for the possible sale, specifying four KC-46A refueling aircraft. The package may also include eight PW4062 turbofan engines, ten AN/ALR-69A radar warning receivers, 15 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies, and eight LAIRCM system processor replacements, among other items.
The Bureau of Political-Military Affairs within the State Department stated: “The proposed sale will enhance Qatar’s capability to meet current and future threats by boosting its defense capabilities and interoperability with U.S. and allied forces. It reinforces Qatar’s vital role in regional security.” The department added that Qatar would seamlessly integrate these items and services into its armed forces.
Beyond the central components, the deal also includes missile warning sensors, various devices for propulsion and control, user data module cards, and crypto systems like the KIV-77. However, Congress still has the power to halt the transaction.
The announcement came amidst ongoing tensions, with Gulf allies facing significant threats from Iran since hostilities with Washington resumed in late February. Iran has launched ballistic and cruise missiles and utilized attack drones against Gulf countries, with Qatar among them.
The State Department clarified that this proposed sale would not disrupt the existing military balance in the region.
In related defense news, the U.S. military confirmed that the USS George Washington aircraft carrier arrived in the Middle East theater this week. It comes to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, amidst concerns about the crew’s mental health and supply issues during lengthy deployments.
