In Hautvillers, France, champagne producers face an intensely early harvest, spurred by extreme heat and drought that have hastened grape maturation. This tight window challenges vintners to preserve the quality of the renowned sparkling wine.
Harvesting crews in Hautvillers start their day before sunrise at 6:30 AM amid vines recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015. For Alexandre Gobillard, head of production at Gobillard & Fils, beginning the harvest in mid-August is unprecedented.
This is historic in Champagne,stated Gobillard.I have worked on this estate for 30 years. In the past, my father would tell me to go on vacation around the 15th of August. Today is August 18th, and we’re in full harvest.
At 50, Gobillard represents the fourth generation involved in his family’s vineyards. Gobillard & Fils manages 40 hectares (nearly 100 acres) of vines, producing about 1.5 million bottles annually.
Climate Change Accelerates Harvest
The official Champagne harvest opened this year between August 12th and 17th, nearly a month earlier than traditionally expected. A late March frost impacted the vineyards after warm weather spurred early budding, reducing potential yields. Four subsequent heatwaves—unprecedented in the region—further affected the harvest, as explained by Gobillard.
Sun-scorched grapes turned brown, which Gobillard noted as unusual. Losing about 10% of the grapes tends to result in reduced volume rather than diminished quality. Early harvests have become common in Champagne and other French wine regions as temperatures rise. Similar conditions have also affected Italian sparkling wine producers.
David Chatillon, president of the Union of Champagne Houses, remarked that weather conditions will clearly reduce yields this year. It’s not only due to the drought,
he said. Spring frosts led to a 43% loss of potential production, and the drought exacerbated the issue.
He emphasized that climate change has been a focus for the industry for 25 years, prompting investment in research and innovation, including the development of grape varieties more resilient to disease and that mature later.
Heat Speeds Up Grape Ripening
Gobillard has seen this change unfold across generations. My grandfather’s generation harvested 100 days after flowering, my father’s in 90 days, and now we’re down to 80,
he said.
This summer’s record temperatures further compressed the ripening period. In June, temperatures in Champagne reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
The vine needs water to live,
explained Gobillard. The berries lost water to sustain the vine, leading to a much higher concentration of sugar. That sped up everything.
While monitoring the first must of the year, Gobillard gauged its sugar level, a key indicator of potential alcohol content and the optimal timing of the harvest. Champagne shouldn’t be too alcoholic. We seek delicacy,
he added.
Early Harvest Tests Champagne Traditions
An early harvest also presents logistical challenges in this region, which traditionally relies on manual grape picking. The timing caught some workers still on summer vacation, causing transportation delays. Gobillard aims to complete the estate’s harvest in about nine days, involving roughly 120 workers recruited from across France and Poland.
This genuinely alters how we view traditional methods in Champagne,observed Geoffrey Bonnet-Gobillard, 30, commercial director of the family champagne house.Manual harvesting entails substantial limitations: housing people, feeding them, recruiting them. It’s challenging, especially with early August harvests.
Such pressures might eventually lead producers to reevaluate traditional practices as agricultural machinery becomes increasingly sophisticated, Bonnet-Gobillard suggested. The house primarily sells its champagne in European markets, including the UK, Belgium, Italy, and Spain, as well as in West Africa, with smaller volumes destined for the US and Asia.
High Stakes for a Global Industry
The 2026 sector report by Comité Champagne highlighted that 266.1 million bottles were shipped in France and abroad last year, generating 5.7 billion euros ($6.6 billion) in sales. Exports accounted for 56.5% of shipments. Champagne made up about 8% of global sparkling wine consumption by volume but 31% by value.
The sector supports around 30,000 direct jobs and requires approximately 100,000 temporary workers for the harvest, according to Comité Champagne. Despite this year’s tough conditions, the grapes surveyed by Gobillard appear promising. I’m pleased with what I’m seeing,
he affirmed. Concerns existed that the drought might result in very light clusters, but we’re satisfied with these sections. The quantity should suffice and the quality will be present.
There is little time to waste. It’s time to pick them. We must move quickly,
Gobillard urged.
