DNC Faces Criticism Over Convention Site Decision

1 day ago 0

Atlanta’s Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens has openly criticized the Democratic National Committee’s leadership. He accused party leaders of disregarding Black voters and the southern region. His comments came after the DNC excluded Atlanta from its shortlist to host the 2028 presidential convention.

In a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, Dickens addressed DNC Chairman Ken Martin. The letter stated that the DNC is making misguided decisions by narrowing the convention options to Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia.

The concerns raised by Dickens reflect a broader sentiment among southern Democrats. Many emphasize that the Democratic Party cannot ignore the South and its Black voters as the 2028 elections approach. Christale Spain, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair, remarked that the South represents the future, not the past. Similarly, Democratic leaders from five southern states have urged the DNC not to assume the unwavering support of Black voters.

They are afraid to leave their comfort zone and blind to the fact that the South is the answer. They are abandoning Atlanta, abandoning the South, and once again abandoning Black voters, Dickens expressed in his letter. He pointed out that Atlanta has not hosted a convention in nearly four decades, despite repeated opportunities.

While the DNC avoided specific comments on Dickens’ letter, they highlighted their broader focus on the southern region. DNC Chairman Martin noted the potential of the 2028 convention and expressed satisfaction with the bids from Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. He anticipates finalizing the host city soon.

The DNC has recently chosen South Carolina to lead its 2028 nominating calendar. The move signifies an effort to acknowledge racial diversity within the party’s early voting states. According to the Census, these states collectively house 4.6 million Black individuals.

The DNC’s final three candidates to host the 2028 convention are Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. On the other hand, Atlanta and Chicago were removed from consideration. The final selection process involves reviewing logistics, contract negotiations, and collaborations with local partners.

A DNC official mentioned that the selection criteria included logistical capabilities, the ability to form local partnerships, and alignment with Democratic values.

Site visits by DNC officials to the candidate cities took place in April and May. Atlanta promoted itself as a strategically vital location for the Democratic Party in the South, showing the ability to host large-scale events.

Ken Martin stressed the necessity for the Democratic Party to focus on areas where Black electoral power is under threat. The lack of support for Atlanta is seen as a missed opportunity to mobilize support in the Southeast. Martin’s letter concluded with a call for Democratic leadership ready to confront pressing challenges.
