College campuses often feature a distinctive type of sweatshirt: oversized, casual, and adorned with university names in embroidered block letters. However, by 2026, you’ll see trendsetting Gen Z individuals wearing shirts with a five-letter symbol: PARKE. This represents the last name of Chelsea Parke Kramer, a Gen Z entrepreneur who transformed the traditional student clothing staple for a new era. Her brand has captured college campuses nationwide, leading to a business valued at approximately £16 million.
These popular sweatshirts are priced at around $130. While steep, the price isn’t prohibitive. Their allure lies in scarcity, a key status symbol among Gen Z, contrasting with traditional luxury labels. This scarcity is a valuable aspect in shaping aspirational wardrobes.

The Appeal of Scarcity
Parke sweaters are in high demand, with collections selling out rapidly, causing queues and website congestion. Events like Parke’s Core Shop drops urge shoppers to grab limited stock items swiftly. During a recent Target collaboration, ardent shoppers began queuing at 3 a.m., with stores running out in under five minutes. Resale sites quickly featured marked-up items.
This trend isn’t confined to Parke. Limited editions like Stanley cups at Target prompt quick sellouts, leading to resale prices reaching $250 online, up from around $50. Similar dynamics occur with Trader Joe’s seasonal tote bags, where scarcity creates fervor and resale listings emerge on platforms like eBay and Depop.
Felicia Zangri, a 23-year-old from Nashville, possesses one of the sweatshirts. According to her, the persistent sense of imminent sellout contributes to enduring appeal within her demographic, aiding in price justification. Parke builds anticipation with social media teasers for collections like Summerland, keeping followers eager but uncertain about securing items.
Marketing director Rocco Baldasarre sees ubiquitous items as ‘the enemy of cool.’ Today, accessibility through resale platforms, dupes, and financing diminish the cultural impact of hefty price tags. Instead, prized items are those unattainable to the masses.
The Narrative of Ownership
Scarcity not only transforms products into stories but enhances cultural cache. Lucy Blackley, founder of Bombiix, highlights the narrative appeal — owning an item before it sold out or getting something coveted. Social media amplifies this storytelling, turning accessible products into symbols of status.
Owning sold-out goods signifies more than wealth. Jeff Peters, vice president of strategic planning at Mower, describes this shift from financial status to cultural prestige — signaling taste, timing, and exclusivity. These items exemplify being early, informed, and distinct.
Emily Holliday, a 29-year-old from Minnetonka, Minnesota, shares her experience of acquiring a Parke sweater during an online restock after prolonged unavailability. She appreciates the exclusivity and high quality. Likewise, Katie Blevins, 25, from Richmond, Virginia, was initially skeptical of Parke. Yet, her roommate persuaded her, and she commends Parke’s marketing for its successful sense of exclusivity. The quality reinforces the desirability seen on social media, driving interest further. The strategy holds when the product meets expectations.
Scarcity can be either strategically engineered or naturally occurring, later bolstered by social media. Mahmud considers Trader Joe’s tote bags as examples of ‘geographic scarcity’ becoming status symbols, while Stanley tumblers gained traction following sell-outs driven by platforms like TikTok.
Maintaining Genuine Scarcity
Experts remind us, however, that scarcity should be genuine. Blackley warns against forced scarcity, advising that it risks undermining a brand’s credibility. Thoughtful scarcity imbues products with significance, while perceived disorder detracts from a brand’s reputation.
