President Donald Trump took on the role of tour guide at the White House, highlighting the construction of a helipad on the lawn. He also signed a piece of the new structure, emphasizing its grandeur to impress visiting foreign leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping, expected next month.
Trump expressed enthusiasm for the quality of granite being laid, contrasting it with asphalt. He explained that the stone withstands 35,000 pounds per square inch of pressure, showcasing its strength by stating, That’s stone that, if you took a hammer and you started hammering right now — all day long — you wouldn’t see a mark on it,
despite ongoing work noise.
Additionally, Trump revealed updates to the walkway from the diplomatic entrance and parts of South Lawn’s asphalt driveway with white granite. He remarked, One thing I know how to do is build,
dismissing asphalt as unsuitable for a distinguished place like the White House.
The president embraces his role in managing White House renovations, revisiting his roots as a real estate developer. He often showcases his work to the press and last year, he appeared on the briefing room roof to assess future projects. This summer, he shared progress on a ballroom construction site.
These projects remain central for Trump amid other challenges. His focus hasn’t shifted from building, even as Iran confrontations continue, approval ratings dip, and economic concerns rise with midterm elections approaching.
Trump stressed the lasting nature of these projects, asserting, This will be here long after we’re gone,
though there are doubts about their longevity. Previous claims about the Reflecting Pool’s durability were short-lived when its paint and liner deteriorated soon after completion.
Regarding the $400 million ballroom, Trump argued it would enhance White House security with features like anti-drone technology. His administration’s $1 billion funding request for military upgrades was rejected, but work proceeds as Trump awaits the Supreme Court’s decision on legal challenges. He believes it will ultimately allow the project to move forward.
Trump’s discussions often return to grass, crediting Scotts-Miracle Gro for their contribution to White House lawn repairs. The company’s former CEO is a Trump supporter, and they donated $1 million for repairs following damage from Trump’s UFC fight on his 80th birthday and helipad construction.
During the tour, Trump signed a granite piece inscribed with Donald Trump 45-47 president,
featuring an eagle for the helipad’s presidential seal. He stated, This is something I think the press should see,
and involved workers in signing the stone, joking about leaving his mark for future generations.
Trump acknowledged delays in the helipad project for landscape adjustments. He assured that the granite’s durability defies nature, with a million-year life
that ensures it will never break. It will never leak.
This claim stands in contrast to the issues faced with the Reflecting Pool.
