On Thursday, North Korea launched a series of ballistic missiles towards the sea, according to South Korea’s military. This occurred just after North Korea disregarded the U.S. decision to reduce military exercises with South Korea, in an attempt to resume diplomatic talks.
Details of the Missile Launch
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that approximately ten short-range ballistic missiles were launched from North Korea’s capital region around 5 p.m. local time. Each missile traveled about 300 kilometers (185 miles) toward North Korea’s eastern waters.
Following the launch, South Korea intensified its surveillance efforts. It is closely coordinating with the U.S. and Japan to monitor the situation. South Korea’s presidential national security council released a statement, calling for North Korea to cease ballistic missile launches.
Japan also detected the suspected missile launch, according to the Japanese prime minister’s office.
U.S. and South Korean Military Drills
President Donald Trump had earlier instructed the Pentagon to significantly reduce the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, which began on Monday. Citing his positive relationship with Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s lack of support over the Iran conflict, Trump emphasized a reduction.
On Wednesday, the South Korean and U.S. militaries confirmed they had shortened the drills by decreasing their duration and canceling some field training exercises. This decision raised concerns about the partners’ combined defense strength.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, criticized Trump’s initiative, stating that the drills remain provocative and aggressive despite the reduction. She refuted Trump’s claim that Kim Jong Un had responded positively to his request for dialogue, though she noted that personal relations between Kim and Trump are still strong.
Prospects for Diplomacy
When asked about a potential meeting with Kim Jong Un this year, Trump affirmed interest but didn’t disclose if letters are exchanged with Kim, mentioning only that he gets along with him.
Context of the Ulchi Freedom Shield
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises represent key annual drills between the U.S. and South Korea to fortify their response capabilities to any North Korean threats. While Washington and Seoul assert these drills are defensive, North Korea views them as a preparation for invasion and often retaliates with weapons tests.
Prior to the start of this year’s drills, North Korea condemned the U.S. and South Korea for allegedly planning further provocative exercises and promised a strong deterrent. Shortly before the drills, North Korea launched two ballistic missiles into the sea.
Diplomatic Stalemate
Diplomatic efforts between Trump and Kim Jong Un faltered in 2019 over disagreements on sanctions relief for North Korea, in exchange for dismantling part of its nuclear capabilities. Since then, Kim has avoided U.S. talks, focused on enhancing his weapons, and collaborated with Russia.
Kim remains firm on maintaining his nuclear program negotiations free. Analysts suggest Kim holds more leverage now compared to 2018 and 2019. He likely seeks international recognition as a nuclear state, aiming for significant sanctions relief with minimal steps toward denuclearization.
