Soccer fan groups worldwide have urged Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president. This comes after his proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. The fan-led petition, known as #InfantinOut, also calls for a complete overhaul of FIFA to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.
The petition criticizes Infantino’s proposition to create a commercial spinoff, which he later abandoned due to overwhelming opposition. It states that this move has tarnished the reputation of football. The participating groups include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, North America’s Independent Supporters Council, and around 40 more national fan groups.
Despite intensive pressure, Infantino has refused to resign. UEFA, the European soccer authority, has expressed a lack of confidence in him. Criticisms have also come from CONCACAF, representing North and Central America, and the Asian Football Confederation.
According to the petition, Infantino has shown a significant leadership failure incompatible with democratic principles. It accuses him of consolidating power, using opaque decision-making processes, and nurturing a personality cult, which has eroded trust in FIFA’s leadership.
The petition emphasizes that, for FIFA’s credibility and the sport’s future, Infantino must resign. It also mentions his previous support for controversial projects, such as the European Super League and changing the World Cup schedule to occur every two years.
