Christian Gym’s Unique Approach to Exercise

48 minutes ago 0

Jeff Hambrecht, the owner of Proverbs 27:17, a Christian gym in Oklahoma City, seeks to address ‘temptation’ in exercise. His men’s only fitness center has sparked both support and criticism.

Many Americans occupy gyms that are crowded and co-ed. Some find this environment distracting and are looking for alternatives without such distractions.

“The focus on lust is just a small part of what the gym offers,” said Hambrecht. “It’s not about men who can’t control themselves. If you avoid alcohol and drugs as an addict, why would you not avoid environments that trigger other struggles like lust?”

Hambrecht, who overcame addiction with the help of his faith, believes in providing a space for men to find community, reduce stigmas, and open dialogues around mental health and other personal issues.

He explains, “There is no place for men to be vulnerable and grow closer to God alongside others pursuing the same goals. We’re removing distractions to focus on personal and spiritual growth.”

Kim Abt, who owns PWRGRLS gym in Sherman Oaks, California, supports the idea of gender-segregated gyms. Her women-only gym caters to those who feel intimidated or who have faced harassment elsewhere.

Fitness influencer Brad Jensen, known as ‘thesoberbodybuilder,’ understands the mixed responses to Proverbs 27:17. He suggests, “A Christian gym with a dress code inclusive of women could foster a community with shared values.”

Jensen acknowledges the line between acceptable attire and actions that make others uncomfortable in gyms. He comments on the rise of social media behavior that goes too far, saying, “If actions make half the gym feel uneasy, it’s crossing a line.”
