The Republican National Committee (RNC) cautioned that the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA) recent online praise for Fidel Castro could harm Democrats in the upcoming November elections. They criticized the group for admiring the late Cuban dictator and demanding the prosecution of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio over the Trump administration’s Cuba policies.
Natalie Baldassarre, RNC national press secretary, stated to Fox News Digital that Democrats are aligning themselves with policies that have left countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and China in dire conditions, lacking basic necessities and freedoms.
“Their embrace of this ideology is political suicide, and it will lead to their defeat,” Baldassarre said.
Marco Rubio, whose parents were Cuban immigrants, labeled Castro’s legacy as devastating in a post on social media. He highlighted the destruction Castro brought to Cuba and condemned his oppressive regime.
The DSA’s statement praised Castro for his role in resisting imperialism and fighting for self-determination in the Global South. The organization argued that U.S. restrictions under Rubio’s leadership amounted to genocide, hindering essential resources from reaching Cuban civilians.
“By imposing conditions that harm civilians, Marco Rubio is leading a genocide,” the DSA stated.
They called for an end to the U.S. blockade, the normalization of relations, reparations for alleged damage, and Rubio’s prosecution for crimes against humanity.
The White House refuted the DSA’s claims, criticizing Cuba’s communist government for the country’s economic struggles and human rights violations. Anna Kelly, a spokeswoman, emphasized that the U.S. is willing to foster a new relationship with Cuba, only hindered by its current leadership.
“The Cuban regime embodies the flaws of communism, with its population suffering from shortages and rights abuses,” Kelly said.
The U.S. administration increased its pressure campaign on Cuba in June, targeting five entities that generated revenue for Havana, including military-controlled businesses and members of Castro’s family. This move followed an earlier executive order aimed at sanctioning those linked to repression in Cuba.
A State Department report labeled Cuba as a stronghold of 21st-century communism and implicated the DSA in supporting pro-Cuba activism in the U.S. The DSA dismissed the report, defending its independence from the Cuban government and alleging the administration’s attempts to stifle its movement.
Fidel Castro passed away in 2016 at age 90, after stepping down due to illness in 2006, delegating power to his brother Raúl.
