The U.S. State Department confirmed that five Americans lost their lives in a helicopter crash in northern Kenya. The aircraft, carrying seven individuals, went down in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County at 9:13 a.m. local time. All passengers and the pilot perished in the crash, according to local police.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson expressed condolences, stating the U.S. Embassy is in communication with local authorities and offering consular support. The spokesperson added, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones on their loss.”

Efforts by Kenya’s Red Cross to conduct search and recovery were hampered by the challenging terrain and a fire at the crash site. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority identified the operator as Lady Lori Kenya. The company acknowledged the involvement of its aircraft, indicating the helicopter was chartered from Suyian Conservancy to Mount Ololokwe. They expressed sympathies and confirmed their cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

An additional crew was sent from Isiolo to assist after the terrain complicated recovery operations. Video footage verified by NBC News depicted the crash debris scattered in the foothills, with some parts still aflame.

The identities of those on board were not disclosed publicly. However, José Suárez, the president and general manager of several Telemundo-owned stations in Florida, was confirmed as deceased. NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde informed employees of Suárez’s passing. Suárez had a distinguished 20-year career at NBCUniversal, leading stations across multiple U.S. cities. He was described as an impactful leader who left a significant mark on the communities he served.

Ecuador’s National Assembly reported the deaths of Michele Sensi-Contugi Ycaza, the director general of the national intelligence center, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan Vásconez. Ecuadorian parliament will honor them by flying the national flag at half-staff for three days.
