In an interview with OutKick, Sam Burns revealed that he never contemplated leaving the PGA Tour for LIV Golf when it was established in 2022. Despite his decision, he holds no grudges against those who chose differently.
Four years later, with LIV Golf facing uncertainty, Burns expressed his openness to welcoming back players like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to the PGA Tour.
I think it’s best for the game of golf as a whole. And ultimately that’s what I want as a competitor. You want to play against the best players every week.
Speaking about the future, Burns said, “Ultimately, I think there will be a path back for those guys. I don’t exactly know what it’ll look like.”
Burns was among those who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour when LIV emerged. Ranked seventh globally, Burns is a prominent American golfer.
During a promotional event at The Highlands Golf & Tennis in Forest Park, where he partnered with Raising Cane’s, Burns reiterated his commitment to the PGA Tour.
I fully support the PGA Tour 100 percent. It was a pretty easy decision for me.
Despite staying, Burns respects the choices of those who joined LIV Golf.
I don’t really fault anyone for the decision that they make to go play another tour.
He understands that individual circumstances and experiences influenced those decisions.
Reflecting on Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour, Burns acknowledged the challenges faced by former LIV players. Koepka returned through the now-closed Returning Member Program, which included financial penalties and restrictions.
Meanwhile, LIV Golf is undergoing significant changes. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will cease financial support after 2026. However, LIV’s CEO Scott O’Neil announced a new lead investor.
I think time might run out for the breakaway tour,a LIV Golf player admitted recently.
The 2026 LIV season will conclude earlier than planned, with the Indianapolis event taking the place of the team championship.
Regarding the future, Burns commented, “A lot of the LIV stuff is kind of up in the air right now. I don’t really know the future of it.”
As for return policies, Burns admitted, “It’s definitely a topic that’s kind of over my head. There’s a lot of things to figure out with it.”
Burns remains focused on his goal: seeing top golfers compete together again.
I think ultimately you’ll see those guys back at some point. I don’t know what the path will look like or their return to the PGA Tour. But as a fan of golf as well, I think it’s great for our game.
