Mexico Ends 40-Year World Cup Knockout Stage Drought

MEXICO CITY — The long wait is over for Mexico in the World Cup knockout stages. Previously accustomed to disappointment at this level, Mexican fans can now celebrate a historic victory.

On Tuesday night, Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0, marking the first time in four decades they have advanced past this stage. Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored in quick succession during the first half, propelling Mexico into the round of 16.

A Historic Win

Quiñones opened with a goal in the 22nd minute, and Jiménez added another in the 31st. Mexico last won a knockout-stage match in 1986 when they hosted the tournament. The current coach, Javier Aguirre, played on the ‘86 team.

“It means a lot to me because I couldn’t progress in the knockout stage,” Aguirre said. “We’re in the round of 16, and there’s a strong connection with the fans. We’re like a family. It’s amazing.”

Mexico had struggled at this level since 1994, enduring seven consecutive defeats. They didn’t make it past the group stage in 2022. Aguirre, Mexico’s head coach since 2024, played roles in 1994, 2002, and 2010.

“We will be on high alert until Sunday. We’ll see if we can win again,” Aguirre commented.

Achievements and Records

Mexico played at Azteca Stadium, remaining undefeated in World Cup matches there. The victory extended their unbeaten run to 12 games. This win also marked the first CONCACAF victory over a CONMEBOL team in a World Cup knockout match.

Quiñones’ goal makes him Mexico’s second-highest scorer in the World Cup. The 29-year-old, originally from Colombia, became a naturalized citizen in 2023.

“Life is about struggle and fight,” he said. “I’m taking full advantage of my opportunity.”

Jiménez’s goal, his second of the tournament, cemented his place as one of Mexico’s top scorers. Mexico will face the winner of the England vs. Congo match next.
