Florida’s 19th Congressional District Race

The pursuit to replace Republican Representative Byron Donalds, who is vying for the governor’s office, has attracted a distinctive group of candidates. Located in Southwest Florida, this district encompasses areas such as Cape Coral, Naples, and Fort Myers.

John Strand: Convicted Jan. 6 Rioter

Among the candidates is John Strand. Formerly a model and actor, Strand is also a convicted and pardoned rioter from January 6. Despite growing up in Beverly Hills, California, he is participating in this Congressional race without deep Florida roots.

Strand defends his candidacy by highlighting the many Florida residents who are transplants themselves. He believes calling opponents “carpetbaggers” is hypocritical given this. He mentions moving to the district before its seat was vacated.

Local Roots vs. Recent Transplants

Jim Schwartzel, a longtime Florida resident, uses campaign ads to criticize those without substantial ties to the state. His ads target figures like Chris Collins from New York, pardoned by Trump, and Jim Oberweis, formerly an Illinois state lawmaker.

Oberweis, who owns a home in Bonita Springs for 16 years, counters such accusations by asserting his longstanding presence in Florida.

Endorsements and Out-of-State Candidates

Catalina Lauf, who recently relocated to Florida from Illinois and received an endorsement from Trump, challenges the notion of carpetbagging by focusing on her conservative principles and desire to raise her family in Florida.

Lauf emphasizes her belief in “faith, family, and freedom,” which she argues distinguishes her from others perceived as liberals.

Other Notable Candidates

Madison Cawthorn, formerly a North Carolina Representative, now runs for Congress in Florida following his expulsion due to scandals.

Linda Sawyer, campaigning on healthcare reform, and Ola Hawatmeh, who ran in New York, are also part of the crowded race. They contend that bringing new perspectives is more critical than long-standing local ties.

Greg Bukowski, known as Tex, recently transitioned from Texas and is another entrant in the race.

Voter Perspectives

Many voters, themselves transplants, prioritize conservative representation over candidates’ origins. Voters like Therese Wilkinson and Jim Dean express indifference towards candidates’ states of origin.

Jim Dean supports Mike Pedersen for his “old school American values,” although Pedersen remains low in local polls.

A Competitive Race

Mercedes Price-Harry, a local Republican official, notes the influx of candidates from outside the district, warning against assuming easy victories. The misconception about Southwest Florida’s political landscape and community dynamics remains prevalent.
