Islam Makhachev successfully retained his UFC Welterweight Championship against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on Saturday night. He won with a unanimous decision, with judges’ scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47. The victory immediately sparked discussions about his next opponent.
Carlos Prates was present at the Philadelphia event and, following the main event, a video surfaced of him issuing a challenge to Makhachev. “I will knock you out, bro. I will knock you out. I will bring that belt to Brazil. The first welterweight champion from Brazil,” Prates stated in the clip.
Prates is currently enjoying a three-fight winning streak. His latest triumph was a third-round TKO against Jack Della Maddalena at a UFC Fight Night event in Perth, Australia. His most recent loss was to Makhachev’s opponent from the previous night. Prates lost to Machado Garry via unanimous decision at a UFC event last April.
Prates, holding a professional record of 24 wins, 7 losses, and 0 draws, is ranked No. 1 among welterweights in the Meta UFC Rankings. He positions himself as the top choice for Makhachev’s next opponent. With 19 career knockouts, Prates is confident in his ability to defeat Makhachev.
Despite his confidence, some believe Makhachev would have an advantage due to Prates’ less adept wrestling skills. Makhachev, an elite grappler with multiple submission victories, poses a strong threat to those lacking defensive grappling.
After his recent win, Makhachev expressed his thoughts on his next potential opponent. “Honestly, if you ask me today, Shavkat is not fighting; Prates is still fighting, still active, and maybe Prates. Because Morales also is good, but I don’t know last time, I don’t remember when he fight. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates,” he said.
Makhachev, now 34 years old, seems eager to secure his next fight soon. Indicating that age is a factor, he shows a strong interest in facing Prates, pending official arrangements.
