Tourists traveling across Greece’s islands on high-speed ferries are reporting challenging rides and notable seasickness. Many have shared their experiences on social media, describing the turbulent crossings and instances of illness aboard these vessels.
High-speed ferries are a popular choice for those wanting quick travel between islands, says Mina Agnos, founder of Travelive. She notes, “Most clients look for the quickest point from A to B.” However, rough weather, particularly around the Cyclades with its Meltemi winds, can unsettle these journeys.
Greece’s attractions, including its beaches and historical sites, continue to draw tourists. The Bank of Greece reported a 21% increase in tourism from January to May compared to the same period in 2025. Specifically, Santorini saw approximately 3.4 million visitors in 2023.
Despite their convenience, rapid ferries can cause discomfort. Some vessels traveling between 40 to 50 knots (46 to 58 miles per hour) can cut travel times in half but are also prone to causing seasickness in choppy seas, according to Direct Ferries.
The journey can turn rough when the wind and sea conditions deteriorate.
Recent discussions on platforms like Reddit show travelers expressing concerns about these crossings. For instance, one traveler planning to go from Piraeus to Naxos shared concerns after hearing multiple accounts of rough journeys, while another stated, “It’s a different kind of motion sickness.”
Reports label some high-speed ferries as “vomit comets.” However, Agnos argues that social media exaggerates this issue, saying, “I’ve had this experience twice in my lifetime.” She advises tourists to consult with travel advisors familiar with Greece to plan routes that reduce the risk of uncomfortable crossings.
Travel advisor Kelly Shea recommends using airports for travel between islands to avoid rough ferry routes. She highlights weather challenges, especially in the Cyclades during summer with high winds and waves. This is crucial for ensuring a pleasant travel experience.
