17 hours ago 0

Background of the Tragic Event

Chad Hickman, age 39, was identified as the suspect behind a mass shooting in rural Michigan. Five people lost their lives across different locations in Missaukee County, and one person was critically injured. Hickman himself was later discovered dead. Authorities have yet to reveal his cause of death or a motive as of Saturday.

Hickman’s Legal History

Hickman had a history of legal issues. Court records show he pleaded guilty in 2024 to misdemeanor charges: fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. These charges related to an incident from 2010. During separate divorce proceedings, allegations of domestic violence, control, and coercion emerged.

The Shooting Incident

Michigan State Police responded around 11:40 a.m. on Friday to a report of gunshots at a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township. Upon arrival, officers found three people dead and another critically injured. The injured individual was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The shooter had fled the scene before the police arrived. Authorities quickly labeled him armed and dangerous, mobilizing a large-scale search operation. The search included the MSP Emergency Support Team along with aviation and canine units. As the search progressed, police discovered a fourth victim at another location within Missaukee County.

Later, law enforcement found Hickman’s vehicle near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township. There they discovered Hickman and a fifth victim dead, bringing the total death toll to six, including Hickman. One person remains critically injured.

Community Impact and Investigation

This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved. We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.

These were the sentiments expressed by MSP Lieutenant Ashley Miller.

Authorities have not yet announced the identities of the victims, their relationships to Hickman, or the shooter’s possible motives. The cause and manner of Hickman’s death also remain undisclosed.

Details About Chad Hickman

Chad Hickman resided in the Lake City-Jennings area of Missaukee County. He had been identified by the sheriff’s office as armed and dangerous during their search. Public knowledge about Hickman’s personal and professional life is sparse. However, records from The Detroit News detail his prior criminal case, involving child abuse claims.

Hickman was sentenced to time in county jail for his misdemeanor offenses. More serious charges previously levied against him, such as assault with intent to do great bodily harm and first-degree criminal sexual conduct, were dismissed. Under Michigan law, fourth-degree child abuse involves actions that pose unreasonable risks to a child, and contributing to delinquency involves encouraging conduct leading to a child’s neglect.
