Bill Maher Discusses Immigration and American Values

Comedian Bill Maher recently expressed his views on immigration and assimilation during an episode of HBO’s Real Time. He stated that immigrants must adopt certain American values including gay rights, women’s equality, and free speech. Maher emphasized that these principles are not exclusive to White culture but are instead liberal values.

Maher criticized both Democrats and Republicans for their extreme stances on immigration policies. He asserted, “If you want the American dream, you have to take the American values.” A professor from Penn State University contested Maher’s views, arguing that America’s history leans more towards assimilation rather than a melting pot approach.

Maher lamented a change in attitude among some immigrants who resist the notion of adapting to American culture. While acknowledging that most immigrants still aspire to assimilate, Maher jested about those who reject the idea. He stated, “If you do get past ICE, America’s actually pretty cool. We welcome your food, art, fashion, and celebrations.” However, he believes the core question remains, “Do you like Western civilization? Because that’s what we are, and it’s not negotiable.”

Honor killings, not letting women show their faces, polygamy, cousin relationships, female genital mutilation — there’s lots of stuff we don’t do here, and it’s non-negotiable,” Maher added.

This viewpoint drew criticism from Nicole Kreisberg, a Penn State assistant professor. She argued that America’s historical demands for assimilation often led to discrimination against immigrants who struggle to fit in due to their racial backgrounds. Kreisberg highlighted how some groups have changed names and customs to blend in, yet still face racial bias.

Maher also questioned progressive views on LGBTQ+ rights, referring to a Washington congressional candidate Melissa Chaudhry’s lack of open support for these rights. He questioned, “Is this the progressive policy now? Do we disregard gay rights to accommodate other beliefs?” His comments extended to criticizing activist Linda Sarsour’s statement on community prioritization over assimilation.

Maher concluded by rejecting accusations of Islamophobia, clarifying that his stance focused on defending liberal values. He insisted, “This has nothing to do with non-whites becoming the majority. It’s about preserving liberal values against illiberal ones.”
