Fans Pay Tribute to Bonnie Tyler in Welsh Town

Hundreds of fans gathered in the streets of a Welsh coastal town on Saturday to pay their respects to the late singer Bonnie Tyler. Her coffin was brought back home, draped in a Welsh flag. The Grammy-nominated pop star, beloved for her ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in a hospital in Portugal at the age of 75.

Tyler had been hospitalized in May in Faro, where she owned a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. Residents and fans from the UK and beyond lined the streets of Mumbles, near Swansea, to see the hearse. Many waited outside her former home, leaving floral tributes.

“She always returned home, always returned to her fans in Wales,” said 18-year-old Carys Edwards. “Her songs touched many people here in Wales; we loved her dearly.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in public housing in Skewen, Wales, around 11 kilometers from Swansea. She had three sisters and two brothers.

Tyler received three Grammy nominations and represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th. Queen Elizabeth II honored her in 2022 as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music, particularly “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

The ballad topped charts in Britain and the United States, surpassing 1 billion streams, fueled by real eclipses in 2017 and 2024, and more recently during this week’s solar eclipse. She was also known for hits like “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero” from the “Footloose” soundtrack.

A service to celebrate Tyler’s life will be held on Monday at a church in Swansea for family and friends before her final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
