Demi Vollering secured her second Tour de France Femmes title in Nice last weekend. The victory marked a significant achievement for both her and the FDJ United Suez team, despite challenges such as illness and injury during the race’s nine stages.
Vollering, aged 29, had a remarkable season, winning prestigious races like the Giro d’Italia, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and Tour of Flanders. Reflecting on these successes, she acknowledged considering a break from the sport after consecutive second-place finishes in the 2024 and 2025 Tours de France. During a contemplative retreat to the mountains, she rekindled her passion for cycling, a connection she has cherished since childhood.
In an interview with The Athletic, Vollering discussed her journey to victory. She emphasized overcoming mental and physical barriers, managing fatigue, and finding new inspiration. Her long-standing connection to cycling began early in life, supported by family bike rides and influenced by competitive cycling cousins.
Overcoming Challenges
This year’s Tour required Vollering to push herself to new limits. Despite being disappointed by a setback at Mont Ventoux, she remained determined. The encouraging support of her team propelled her to plan a strategic comeback, ultimately leading to one of the team’s most successful performances.
The next day proved one of FDJ Suez’s most impressive victories, with a calculated team leadout launching Vollering’s attack on an uncategorised climb to completely overturn the GC.
Even with physical pain from a previous fall, Vollering remained focused, employing mental resilience to maintain her lead over competitor Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney.
Reflecting on Past Challenges
Recalling past struggles, Vollering related how she overcame disappointments from prior Tours. A panic attack during the 2024 race and a physical injury had tested her limits. These experiences taught her valuable lessons in mental fortitude and resilience, helping her refine her approach to competition.
In the 2025 Tour, despite another second-place finish, she drew strength from revisiting cherished childhood experiences. A period of reflection in the mountains allowed her to reconnect with the joy of cycling free from competitive pressure.
Vollering’s Vision for Cycling
Vollering spoke about her ambitions beyond personal victories. She aims to promote the sport of cycling and elevate women’s racing by addressing funding limitations and increasing race accessibility. Considering the potential for the sport’s growth, she advocated for more financially secure team structures that could foster a stronger sense of identity for fans.
She seeks not only to leave a legacy through her achievements in cycling but also to contribute to expanding women’s sports and inspire a new generation of fans.
As one of the sport’s most accomplished athletes, Vollering’s determination, coupled with her visionary aspirations, enhances her impact both on and off the track.
