Alert Air Traffic Controller Prevents Potential Mishap

An air traffic controller at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport acted swiftly to prevent a potential mix-up involving two American Airlines planes, both with the call sign 2482. One plane was landing from Chicago, while the other was preparing to take off.

According to the air traffic controller, who has worked in the field for 25 years, this scenario was unprecedented in his experience. He remarked, “I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much emerge with the same call sign.” Despite the confusion, he quickly separated the aircraft by designating them as American 2482 “departure” and American 2482 “arrival.” Both planes successfully landed and took off without any issues.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced it is investigating the incident. A spokeswoman from American Airlines mentioned that the arriving flight was delayed. A different aircraft at the airport was mistakenly given the same call sign, intended for a flight back to Chicago.
