Balkcom represents a legislative district in Henderson County. She will contest against Democrat Jamie Ager, who secured his party’s nomination in March. The North Carolina GOP’s Executive Committee for the 11th Congressional District chose Balkcom in line with state law, necessitated by Edwards’ late withdrawal.
Balkcom must quickly prepare for the election, which is less than three months away. With absentee ballots going out on September 4, she has limited time to connect with voters. Chuck Edwards, a former ally of President Donald Trump, announced his decision not to seek reelection after the House Ethics Committee recommended a censure for alleged violations of House Rules related to sexual harassment. Edwards denied the allegations but decided to finish his current term.
