Christians in Israel Face Rising Tensions and Violence

In Mount Tabor, Israel, Sister Mayela experiences increased harassment as she moves through Jerusalem’s Old City. She is now accompanied by a Jewish volunteer for her safety. This change stems from a violent attack on another Catholic nun in the area. Christians, who form less than 2% of Israel’s population, feel their visible faith makes them targets during these tense times.

“I’m scared after the attack,” Sister Mayela shared. A longtime resident of Jerusalem, she now relies on faith and support from local Israelis. However, incidents like a recent act where a teen spat near her prove challenging. These events have become more frequent since the conflict reignited on October 7, 2023.

Despite feeling neglected in terms of protection, Christians participated in a pilgrimage to Mount Tabor. This site holds religious significance, believed to be where Jesus was transfigured. Such gatherings emphasize the importance of coexistence for both Christians and Jews, given their histories of persecution.

In the Old City’s mixed religious environment, tensions occasionally rise. Christian nuns, Jewish men, and Muslim women share narrow pathways leading to significant religious landmarks. The Rev. Alberto Pari, who promotes interfaith understanding, cautions against generalizing actions that may lead to further antisemitism.

The Religious Freedom Data Center reports a surge in harassment of Christians, primarily by Jewish nationalists. A Jewish settler has been charged for an attack on a nun in April, and a related institution is pushing for accountability at all legal levels.

George Deek, Israel’s envoy for Christian relations, aims to strengthen ties and ensure Christians in Israel remain safe and thrive. Acknowledging recent incidents, Deek stated these acts are immoral and illegal, promising prosecution.

Additional incidents have prompted global condemnation. Actions by Israeli soldiers abroad and their consequences highlighted the broader issue of intolerance. John Munayer of the Rossing Center cites historical and religious biases as factors behind these tensions.

Within the West Bank, Palestinian Christians face security challenges. Recent attacks on Taybeh, a Christian village, highlight ongoing threats from settlers. Security measures have been enforced, but skepticism remains about their effectiveness.

David Parsons of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem stresses the strategic importance of Christian support for Israel. Yet fear and doubt overshadow interfaith projects, as shown by hesitations during a peace event.

Despite the tension, faith persists among Christians attending Mount Tabor’s pilgrimage. They maintain their religious practices amid challenges. John Akleh, part of the younger generation, notes the importance of preserving Christian identity in the region.

A group from Nazareth, led by Rev. Fadi Shallufi, continues their annual pilgrimage tradition, even during conflict. “We will have a lot of sacrifice, but you will be sure in this land something will change,” Shallufi expressed.
