Kim Mathers, 51, from Chesterfield Township, was jailed on Thursday following a district court judge’s decision regarding her repeated violations in drug and alcohol testing. Judge William Hackel granted the prosecutor’s request to revoke Mathers’ bonds in her multiple cases, citing noncompliance.
Mathers expressed her concern in court, asking her attorney, “How long am I going to be in there?” Judge Hackel of New Baltimore’s 42-II District Court suggested that Mathers could be released for in-patient treatment. Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Joseph McCarthy reminded the court that they have been encouraging her to join a treatment program for two months due to her charges.
McCarthy emphasized the prosecution’s worries, citing repeated offenses and her risk to herself and the community. He requested her immediate remand to jail. Mathers’ attorney, Camilla Barkovic, opposed the prosecution’s assertions but did not dispute Mathers’ bond violations.
Jeremy Stradley, representing EMS Testing and Freedom Bail Bonds, was present for potential testimony on her test results, but it was deemed unnecessary due to Barkovic’s acknowledgment. Following the hearing, Barkovic defended Mathers, labeling her as a victim of the prosecutor’s office.
Mathers, ex-wife of rapper Eminem, has had legal troubles since her arrest in February for drunk driving. Subsequent charges include another drunk driving arrest in May and failing to appear in court in June. Most recently, Mathers was hospitalized on July 11 following a medical emergency at home, during which she allegedly assaulted a police officer. She is facing felony charges related to this incident.
Mathers was also set for sentencing related to her no contest plea on May 11, concerning an impaired driving incident from February 16. This involved a hit-and-run crash with children present in her vehicle. Additionally, Mathers faces another pretrial in her recent felony drunk driving case and a show-cause hearing for her bond violations.
