Michigan Wolverines’ Decision on Top Recruit Bryce Underwood Questioned

The Michigan Wolverines secured the top recruit for the 2025 class, Bryce Underwood, through a competitive bidding process. Some college football experts believe the Wolverines might have made a misjudgment with the young quarterback.

Underwood agreed to an NIL deal worth about $10 million, providing him nearly $3 million per season at Michigan.

The 2025 season results were not as impressive as anticipated for Michigan. Underwood, a freshman from Detroit, Michigan, threw for 2,428 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His completion rate was 60.3%. On the ground, he gained 392 yards and six touchdowns on 88 carries, leading the Wolverines to a 9-4 record.

Some skepticism was voiced by a coach who will face Underwood, speaking to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. Concerns were raised about Underwood’s value and the new Michigan head coach, Kyle Whittingham, noting a lack of quarterback development.

“He’s a good head coach, but in 21 years, they haven’t had a quarterback drafted,” the coach commented. “Paying someone doesn’t ensure success. Reality might set in.”

A Big Ten defensive coordinator shared thoughts with Rittenberg about the pressure linked to Underwood’s earnings.

“Expectations stem from recruiting, not his youth,” the coach noted. “High payments place extra pressure on these players.”

Underwood faced challenges in Michigan’s 27-9 defeat to Ohio State, completing eight of 18 passes for 63 yards, with one interception. Against Texas in the Citrus Bowl, he managed 199 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Though Underwood’s freshman year performance fell short, he might evolve into a formidable quarterback in his sophomore year within Whittingham’s system.

Underwood’s experience serves as a reminder for programs to exercise caution in heavily investing in freshmen due to high school hype. Not every player transitions to the college level successfully. Programs could allocate funds to more stable roster areas.
