North Carolina state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom has been appointed as the new GOP nominee for the state’s 11th Congressional District. This decision follows the announcement last week by incumbent Rep. Chuck Edwards that he will not seek re-election.
The North Carolina Republican Party’s 11th Congressional District Executive Committee selected Balkcom on Monday. Reports indicate that U.S. Sen. Ted Budd and U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, both from North Carolina, have endorsed Balkcom in the race.
“I’m blessed to receive the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District,” Balkcom stated in part of a statement shared by journalists.
Balkcom expressed concerns that many Americans feel the Democratic Party has moved away from its values. She highlighted issues of increased taxation, open borders, and shifts in the way of life as areas where she intends to oppose radical agendas.
Balkcom is set to compete against Democratic candidate Jamie Ager in the upcoming general election. Zach Almond, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, expressed satisfaction with Balkcom’s selection. He described her as having values rooted in Western North Carolina, with experience in agriculture, banking, and finance. He emphasized that Balkcom would serve as a significant asset to the region if elected to Congress.
This development follows Rep. Chuck Edwards’ decision to cease his re-election campaign after the House Committee on Ethics recommended his censure. The committee found that Edwards had engaged in unprofessional conduct towards two young female staffers. Although Edwards denied any inappropriate intentions, the committee’s report cited behaviors including lavish gifts, personal comments, and invitations to intimate settings that could be perceived as advances.
Edwards won the GOP primary for the district earlier this year but announced his withdrawal citing prayer and reflection. He will finish his current term and thanked supporters in his statement.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the upcoming election in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District promises to be closely watched.
