Unexpected Discovery for High School Football Player

A football player from Maumelle High School in Arkansas had a surprising encounter during practice when he found a venomous snake in his helmet.

Last week, after completing warmups, the player felt unusual movement inside his headgear. He brought the helmet to an assistant coach, and upon inspection, a snake was found behind the padding.

The snake, identified as a cottonmouth, was firmly lodged in the helmet. Police officers had to pour water into it to coax the snake out and capture it in a bag. Animal service technicians confirmed the snake’s identity and relocated it to a less populated area.

Cottonmouths rank as the second-most venomous snakes in Arkansas. It’s fortunate the player remained unharmed despite wearing the helmet for nearly an hour.

“It was unreal,” said Chris Davis, the animal services director. “You had to be there and take pictures to believe it.”

After the incident, the player grabbed another helmet and continued practicing. However, the head coach took the opportunity to remind players of the importance of checking their equipment for anything potentially dangerous.

The Maumelle Animal Shelter shared on Facebook that all those involved were safe, emphasizing the need for caution. They pointed out, “Snakes and other critters can find their way into dark, enclosed spaces—such as helmets, shoes, bags, boxes, and more.”

They advised, “Before using any outdoor gear, always inspect it. A quick check can prevent a frightening situation—or worse.”
