Wisconsin Democrats Select David Crowley Over Francesca Hong for Gubernatorial Nomination

Wisconsin Democrats have chosen Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley over state Representative Francesca Hong in a key gubernatorial race. Crowley, seen as a more moderate candidate, was supported by retiring Democratic Governor Tony Evers and other party leaders.

Despite Hong’s significant poll leads ahead of Election Day, Crowley emerged victorious. This decision represents a test of socialism’s influence within the Democratic Party. Crowley will now face Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, backed by former President Donald Trump, in a November election expected to attract national interest.

Crowley and Hong appeared together at a Wisconsin Democrats unity breakfast in Middleton, where Crowley praised Hong for her contributions. He expressed a desire to unite the party and include all viewpoints under one umbrella. “We should not be focusing on excluding anyone,” he stated.

As Crowley shifts focus to the general election, he emphasized the stark contrast between him and Tiffany. Crowley, who began as a community organizer and became the first Black Milwaukee County executive, highlights his working-class roots. His campaign centers on affordable housing, education, healthcare, and clean energy initiatives.

Crowley’s path to nomination was unexpected, with a temporary withdrawal from the race. He reentered after encouragement from family and withdrew Sarah Rodriguez as an opponent. Crowley is critical of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), indicating no willingness to collaborate.

People don’t like socialists. Socialists didn’t poll well,” Crowley commented, expressing doubt about Hong’s electability.

Democratic leaders quickly endorsed Crowley, including the Democratic Governors Association and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. Devin Remiker, Party Chair, praised Crowley’s readiness to challenge Tiffany.

Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, criticized Tiffany and Trump for promoting division. Randolph highlighted Crowley’s focus on unity and collaboration across party lines. “The choice in November is clear,” said Randolph, urging Wisconsinites to reject extremism and support Crowley.
