American eating habits are increasingly moving towards high-protein choices, driving fast-food chains to rethink traditional breakfast options. This trend is in response to the rising consumer demand for meals that offer functional nutrition.
Benefits of Protein at Breakfast
Nutrition experts emphasize that breakfast with protein helps stabilize blood sugar levels. It reduces mid-morning cravings and supports muscle maintenance. Protein-rich breakfasts play a vital role in weight management and appetite regulation compared to carb-heavy alternatives.
Tanya Freirich, a registered dietitian nutritionist from Charlotte, North Carolina, highlighted the importance of protein in morning meals. “The best time to eat protein is consistently throughout the day,” Freirich told Fox News Digital. “Protein in meals helps stabilize your blood sugar after eating, and protein is important for muscle maintenance, repair and growth.”
Freirich recommends eating within one to two hours of waking. Including protein in a moderately sized breakfast can help you feel satisfied, energetic and focused during your morning hours.
Dietary shifts have led restaurant brands to reimagine classics through a protein-focused lens.
Fast Food Chains Reimagining Breakfast
Chick-fil-A is among those tapping into this movement. They incorporate the Southern tradition of chicken and waffles, repackaging them into a high-protein morning meal.
“We know that many of our guests are looking to start their day with meals that are higher in protein, but that shouldn’t mean sacrificing flavor,” Allison Duncan, director of menu & packaging at Chick-fil-A, told Fox News Digital.
Whether with a classic filet and bacon, or customized with an egg or sausage, the new Chicken & Waffles Breakfast Sandwich offers guests a protein-focused start to their day.
In recent years, competitors have expanded their offerings to include egg bites, Greek yogurt parfaits, and customizable meat options, responding to demands for more protein.
Quality of Protein Matters
However, health professionals caution about the quality and source of breakfast protein.
“There is a big difference between types of protein sources,” Freirich explained. “While an omelet with vegetables and a chicken, waffle, bacon, and egg sandwich may contain the same grams of protein, the latter will be much higher in saturated fat and calories.”
She warns that processed fast-food proteins can leave a feeling of heaviness rather than providing energy.
Processed proteins in fast food can increase feelings of lethargy due to high fat and sodium content. They take longer to digest, affecting heart health.
Moderation and Balance
Freirich advocates for moderation with indulgent fast-food choices. “If you love chicken and waffles, perhaps that’s something that you consume once in a while rather than every day,” she said. “Even the healthiest diets include treats or once-in-a-while foods in moderation.”
She suggests balancing indulgent drive-thru breakfast with vegetables, fruits, and fiber throughout the day. “While adding more protein may be the right choice for some, a healthy balanced diet also includes sufficient vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains.”
