Key Loss for Maryland’s Defense as Mathis Suffers Season-Ending Injury

The upcoming season presents significant challenges for Maryland head coach Mike Locksley. An unfortunate incident during training camp will impact the team’s defense. According to Pete Nakos from On3, defensive end Zahir Mathis sustained a season-ending injury during Wednesday’s practice. The specific nature of Mathis’s injury remains unclear.

Mathis demonstrated impressive performance in his freshman year in 2025. Standing at six-foot-six and weighing 220 pounds, he recorded 22 tackles, six sacks, and 8.5 tackles for loss. His sack achievement placed him second on the defensive line, just behind Sidney Stewart who amassed seven sacks that season.

Keeping Mathis in the team was a critical objective for Maryland during the offseason. Questions had arisen concerning Locklsey’s future as head coach, as reflected in his 37-49 record over eight seasons. The team displayed a 4-8 record in its last two seasons, managing only two Big Ten victories.

Maryland’s athletic director, Jim Smith, expressed in November the program’s commitment to roster retention and recruitment. He stated these efforts aimed to support Locksley. Mathis, along with Stewart and quarterback Malik Washington, formed a key group of freshmen whose initial performances showed potential for the Terrapins.

Smith added, “We are working to strengthen our NIL support for 2026 and beyond and have already seen success for next year. We are prioritizing roster retention, recruiting, and competing in the transfer portal. We remain optimistic about the young talent in our program and our current recruiting standings.”

With Mathis out, Maryland must rely on Stewart to have an impactful sophomore year. The team will also count on sophomore defensive end Nahsir Taylor and redshirt sophomore defensive end DD Holmes to reinforce their pass rush capabilities. Maryland’s season opener is against Hampton at home on September 5. They will continue their non-conference schedule by visiting UConn on September 12 and hosting Virginia Tech on September 19.
