PUBLIQuartet’s Exploration of Rhythm in American Music

The PUBLIQuartet’s latest album, Rhythm Nation, delves into the multifaceted realm of rhythm within American music. This New York-based string quartet opts for boldness over convention, frequently incorporating improvisation into their performances. Their musical exploration is extensive, ranging from West African and Venezuelan rhythms to modern complexity and jazz standards, with nods to Janet Jackson.

In the tradition of trailblazing ensembles like the Kronos Quartet, the PUBLIQuartet has embraced a spirit of innovation since its formation in 2010. Among their influences is the Kronos Quartet’s 50 for the Future project, which inspired the inclusion of Sunjata’s Time by Malian composer Fodé Lassana Diabaté. This piece, arranged for string quartet by Jacob Garchik, captures the essence of the balafon and kora, central to West African musical heritage.

The ensemble thrives on creativity and adaptability. In 2016, they improvised live music for a presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The album also features Henry Threadgill’s Sixfivetwo, pushing listeners into an abstract musical territory.

Rhythm Nation takes inspiration from Janet Jackson’s 1989 album of the same name. While some interpretations of Jackson’s pieces may not resonate with everyone, the album overall offers powerful moments, particularly through collaborations such as Baobab by electronic music artist Jlin. Her work showcases a soundscape that the quartet enriches with live improvisation.

This album serves as a testament to the diverse rhythmic story of American music, featuring works from Daniel Bernard Roumain, Duke Ellington, Mazz Swift, and Jeff Scott.
