Rescue Efforts Underway

In the early hours of Tuesday, search and rescue operations commenced across western Colombia following a devastating earthquake. The tremor caused significant loss of life and trapped many individuals under rubble in cities such as Cali, Quibdo, and Pereira. The earthquake, measuring 7.4 in magnitude, has left at least 111 confirmed fatalities according to updates from President Abelardo de la Espriella.

Efforts are focused on 1,600 damaged or collapsed buildings. Soldiers, rescue workers, and local volunteers methodically sift through debris, often using their bare hands to clear concrete blocks. The president described the efforts in a statement on Monday afternoon, highlighting community resilience amidst tragedy.

Missing Persons and Community Response

Families are actively seeking information on loved ones. Citizen-run websites play a pivotal role in this search. Over 2,700 individuals were reported missing by Monday night. Dana Carolina Zamora shared a photo of her uncle, Miguel Ángel Zamora, who vanished from El Cairo, a rural area impacted by the quake. El Cairo experienced significant destruction, with 80% of its buildings affected.

Miguel Ángel, a farmer, lived in a traditional home made of sticks and mud. His family remains hopeful that the lack of communication might be temporary, as expressed by Zamora.

Government Mobilizes Aid

The region surrounding the earthquake’s epicenter, Choco, is remote and often neglected, presenting additional challenges to response efforts. President de la Espriella traveled to Quibdo, the capital, to survey the damage and promised substantial governmental intervention. He announced housing subsidies and extensive deployment of rescue teams and resources.

Choco, long described as Colombia’s ‘land of the forgotten,’ has seen a renewed focus from the government.

International Support and Concerns

The international community, including the U.S. State Department, pledged $15.5 million in aid for immediate relief. Neighboring countries have also extended offers of assistance.

Colombia faces psychological and economic impacts following this disaster. The recent earthquakes in Venezuela, which caused massive casualties, have contributed to nationwide anxiety in Colombia. Mónica Sánchez, a small business owner from Pereira, recounted her experience when a wall collapsed in her factory.

“It was shocking — the city fell down around us,” Sánchez said.

The path to recovery will be lengthy, as communities and industries begin to tackle the long-term effects of the devastation.
