The Current State of Congressional Republicans and Their Impact

Public service is a privilege that requires effective governance within constitutional and legal boundaries. Congressional Republicans have shown themselves undeserving of the majorities they gained in 2024. The upcoming midterm elections offer voters a chance to hold them accountable for their shortcomings.

Our government was designed with checks and balances to prevent tyranny. However, congressional Republicans have neglected this role, acting instead to fulfill President Trump’s demands without true oversight. They unanimously voted on the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance Todd Blanche, Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer, as U.S. attorney general, despite his involvement in corruption.

Blanche participated in creating a slush fund to reward Trump’s allies and provide legal immunity on tax issues for Trump and his family. Republicans on the committee backed Blanche despite his role in obstructing justice in the Epstein files and damaging the Justice Department’s credibility. A few Republican senators could have stopped his confirmation but chose not to.

Blanche’s confirmation highlights the corruption of the Republican Party under Trump’s influence. His wrongdoing is part of a larger pattern of congressional Republicans failing to serve the American public. One major piece of legislation passed by the 119th Congress, misleadingly called the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” provided large tax cuts to the wealthy while reducing funding for food assistance programs.

More than 4.5 million people, including at least 1.5 million children, have lost food assistance as Republicans turn a blind eye. Meanwhile, Republicans eliminated a tax credit that made health insurance more affordable, causing millions to drop coverage. These policies, along with Trump’s tariffs, hurt 70 percent of low-income households, benefiting the top 1 percent.

This approach helps explain why Trump is unpopular and why polls suggest a shift toward Democrats. Progressive candidates win elections by speaking truthfully about the Trump administration and advocating for a government that serves everyone. Trump fears a Congress that could hold him accountable, which drives his attempts to obstruct electoral processes to prevent voter turnout.

Citizens must hold Trump and his congressional supporters accountable and protect elections from any corrupt schemes designed to suppress voting. Engaging in these efforts is essential to guide the nation toward a better future.
