Rep. Jill Tokuda Advances to General Election in Hawaii

Progressive Representative Jill Tokuda, a Democrat from Hawaii, secured a decisive win in the primary election on Saturday. She will face off against Republican State Senator Brenton Awa in the upcoming November election.

Tokuda is vying for her third term in Congress, representing Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. This district encompasses all areas of the state except for the island of Oahu, yet includes both rural and suburban sections of Oahu.

The Cook Political Report categorizes the district as D+12, suggesting a strong likelihood that it will remain under Democratic control in the midterms this year.

In the Democratic primary, Tokuda overcame challenges from three opponents. None posed a serious threat despite broader internal conflicts within the Democratic Party, leading to the ousting of several House Democrat incumbents nationwide.

Meanwhile, her colleague, Representative Ed Case, encountered significant opposition from the left in his primary. Case is viewed as more moderate compared to Tokuda.

In Tokuda’s race, a minor scandal arose involving one of her opponents, Kirill Basin, who was arrested following a violent incident at Keawakapu Beach. Basin allegedly threatened an individual over loud music and reportedly wielded a knife after a confrontation escalated.

Tokuda commented to Hawaii News Now on the video of the incident, describing it as “disturbing.” She emphasized the importance of accountability for anyone’s actions, whether in public office or as a private citizen.
