Transgender activists clashed with women’s sports advocates during a rally held in Minneapolis at the Target Center. Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY Athletics, along with ambassador Kendall Kotzmacher, reported aggressive behavior from counter-protesters. These protesters screamed, tore signs, and followed them to their cars. The rally supported WNBA star Sophie Cunningham, known for advocating sex-protected spaces in female sports.
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) issued a statement highlighting unity among its members despite different experiences and opinions. The statement emphasized values such as justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. It firmly opposed the hate and demonization of individuals, including transgender people, urging constructive dialogue without political manipulation.
“Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm,” the WNBPA stated. “We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.”
Supporters are encouraged to notify security about abusive behavior at games and report harmful online content. Additionally, strengthening Title IX through engagement with elected officials is recommended.
Sophie Cunningham’s comments on protecting young girls in sports from competing against biological men sparked reactions. With advocacy for children in sport, she stated, “young girls…shouldn’t have to go against biological men.” Her focus remains on safeguarding young female athletes.
Rallies for Cunningham have been organized at her games, following her comments that gained attention. While some players disagree, including Megan Rapinoe, criticism arose from her association with Riley Gaines, a competitor against trans swimmer Lia Thomas.
Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom announced his intention to join the WNBA draft, claiming eligibility and the need only to identify as a woman.
