Kansas Basketball Coach Brett Ballard Hospitalized After Crash

Brett Ballard, a well-known college basketball coach from Kansas, is in the hospital with severe injuries after a highway accident on Tuesday night. Ballard, head coach at Washburn University and a former standout player for the Kansas Jayhawks, was involved in the crash while driving his 2024 Ford F-150.

Reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol state that the accident happened on Interstate 470 in Topeka. Ballard’s truck went off the left side of the road just after 8:15 p.m. The vehicle hit a delineator post, moved into a steep embankment, and then struck a concrete bridge pillar, resulting in significant damage. Ballard was alone in the truck and was wearing his seatbelt at the time. Emergency responders quickly took him to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for medical attention.

“We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a car accident last evening,” said Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek. “Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men’s basketball program, and all who are affected during this difficult time.”

Brett Ballard, originally from Hutchinson, has been a prominent figure in Kansas basketball for many years. He played as a guard for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2000 to 2002 under the legendary coach Roy Williams. Later, he served as an assistant coach under Bill Self for seven seasons.

Brett Ballard’s coaching career has been successful. For the last nine seasons, he has led the Washburn Ichabods, turning them into one of the top programs in Division II basketball. Ballard has a remarkable record of 198-81 and has guided Washburn to several NCAA Tournament appearances.

Before his role at Washburn, Ballard was head coach at Baker University. He led their team to a Heart of America Athletic Conference regular-season championship and took them to the NAIA national tournament. His accomplishments have earned him respect throughout the basketball community in Kansas.

As news of his accident spread, supportive messages for Ballard poured in from across Kansas and beyond. People expressed their hope for a full recovery. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, with no further details released yet.
