John James Wins Michigan Republican Gubernatorial Primary

U.S. Representative John James, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has emerged as the winner of Tuesday’s Republican gubernatorial primary in Michigan. According to CBS News, by 10:47 p.m., James led with 155,109 votes against businessman Perry Johnson, who secured 111,942 votes.

The Candidates

John James, a U.S. Army veteran, announced his candidacy for governor in April 2025. With a background as an aviation officer and a leader in supply chain and logistics, James has previously contested U.S. Senate races in 2018 and 2020 but lost to incumbents Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters. He succeeded in elections against Democrat Carl Marlinga in 2022 and 2024.

James’s campaign received significant support, including an endorsement from President Trump. As a result, former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and Rep. Aric Nesbitt, who endorsed James, withdrew from the primary race.

Perry Johnson, renowned for his career in the auto industry, entered the gubernatorial race in January 2026. Previously, he was disqualified from the 2022 governor’s race due to invalid petition signatures. As a former presidential candidate in 2024, Johnson did not qualify for the GOP debates.

Key Issues

During his tenure in Congress, James emphasized national security, energy independence, and law enforcement support. Recently, he has addressed concerns over Canadian wildfire smoke affecting Michigan’s air quality and advocates for environmental resilience and protection of the state’s natural resources.

Johnson’s platform advocates for the elimination of Michigan’s state income tax, suggesting a typical family could save approximately $4,747 annually. He proposes compensating for the revenue loss through auditing government spending, focusing on efficiency, and reforming property taxes. Despite self-funding his campaign, Johnson recalls his financially constrained past, which shapes his perspective on economic policies.
